Program (not a degree)

Academic English Language Program

The Academic English Language program is designed for students whose native language is not English, and who want to study at Atlantic Cape to earn a certificate or degree. The focus is on reading, writing, listening, speaking and American culture with emphasis on group interaction and active learning. Students practice writing and reading extensively at all levels. Class sizes are small with courses offered during the day and evening in the fall, winter, spring and summer.

Students are required to take the Academic English Language Placement Test. Students who are absent from the college for a period of more than 12 months must retake the placement test to re-evaluate students’ skills.

AELP core program courses include Intermediate I Academic English, Intermediate II Academic English, Advanced I Academic English, Advanced II Academic English, Strategies of the American Classroom and Academic Reading and Writing. Starting levels are dependent on placement test results. Supplemental courses include Fundamental English Grammar, Advanced Grammar, Fundamentals of Pronunciation, and Reading and Vocabulary Strategies.  To exit the program, students must earn both a passing grade of C or better for AELP100 and placement into an English Department course from the AELP100 Exit Exam.
