Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Data Collection Technician-Option

Program

This program prepares students for a career as a small unmanned aircraft systems technician, with a degree option in sUAS Data Collection. Upon successful completion, students will demonstrate proficiency in sUAS operations, general maintenance and repair, geospatial data collection and management, and the pre- and post-processing of data. The Data Collection Technician Option also provides specialized training in the use of sophisticated passive and active sensors, as well as advanced image analysis using artificial intelligence.

Students are required to sit for and pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) examination, leading to the Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Rating, which allows for commercial drone operations under 55 lbs. in the National Airspace System. The program includes off-campus field trips, fieldwork, and the development of a portfolio showcasing completed projects and coursework.

For additional information, please contact faculty advisor, Anthony Esposito at (609) 625-1111 ext. 2032 or aesposit@atlanticcape.edu, or department chair, Dr. Otto Hernandez, at (609) 343-4978 or hernande@atlanticcape.edu.

Upon completion of this program students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in UAS operations by safely and effectively operating small unmanned aircraft systems;
  • Pass the FAA Unmanned Aircraft General-Small exam and apply the privileges of the Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Rating in professional settings;
  • Collect, process, secure and analyze data using various passive and active sensors to support decision-making in industries such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban planning;
  • Conduct regular maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and perform repairs on small unmanned aircraft systems to ensure safe and efficient operations;
  • Develop, implement, and oversee sUAS missions, incorporating best practices in flight planning, data management, safety protocols, and data security to maintain the integrity and reliability of collected information.
