NUPN101: Concepts in Practical Nursing 1

This course introduces the client, healthcare, and nursing topics, revealing the foundations of practical nursing. Explored are the bio-psycho-social needs common to all human beings, health promotion maintenance, and restoration, emphasizing the needs of the aged. The QSEN competencies that support quality and safety in practice are presented and built upon in subsequent courses. Nursing skills and professional behaviors are introduced in the supervised clinical laboratory and later practiced in clinical settings.

NUPN102: Concepts in Practical Nursing 2

Credits 8

This course builds on Practical Nursing I developing clinical decision-making and caring interventions for patients with various medical-surgical conditions. A family-centered approach is integrated into caring for childbearing women, newborns, and children, highlighting normal growth and development and common pediatric disorders. The QSEN competencies are used throughout the course to enhance the students’ knowledge of, attitudes, care of, and skills in providing quality and safe patient health care in various clinical settings.

NUPN103: Concepts in Practical Nursing 3

Credits 8

The final phase of the Practical Nursing program concentrates on complex adult health conditions and diseases. The course emphasizes mental health disorders, patient psychological needs, and the communication skills necessary to provide safe, quality patient care. The student builds on the QSEN competencies acquired from the previous courses to implement care, develop leadership skills, and function as part of the interprofessional health care team in multiple clinical settings.

NURS109: LPN Transition Course

Credits 1
Bridges the LPN into the second semester of nursing. Successful completion enables the LPN to receive an additional eight credits (for NURS110-Nursing I course). The LPN student is introduced to the role of the RN, emphasizing the nursing process and physical assessment, along with medical-surgical nursing concepts specific to the adult.

NURS110: Nursing I

Credits 8
Introduction to nursing as a profession. Focuses on Bio-Psycho-Social needs common to all human beings: health promotion, maintenance and restoration. Fundamental nursing skills required to deliver safe and therapeutic nursing care are taught in supervised laboratory and clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on principles of biological and social sciences applicable to nursing care, the nursing process, and the needs of the aged.

NURS112: Nursing II

Credits 8
Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing utilizing and building upon concepts and skills learned and practiced in NURS110-Nursing I. Emphasis upon the application of the nursing process to the care of the adult client. Incorporated will be mental health and rehabilitation concepts related to the care of the adult medical-surgical patient.

NURS200: Nursing III

Credits 9

Builds upon concepts and skills learned in NURS112-Nursing II to assist adults to health. Specific concepts of family will be introduced as well as major mental health issues. Additional acute and chronic health problems will be addressed. Delegation, patient education and outcome attainment while caring for patient groups will be emphasized.

NURS204: Nursing Management

Credits 1
Beginning elements of management of care for groups of patients in health care settings by building upon communication techniques, collaborative skills, planning delivery of care and healthcare economics.

NURS206: Nursing IV

Credits 9
Focuses on the childbearing and childrearing family and community. Includes the family’s adaptation to the normal antepartal, intrapartal and postpartal periods; continues with the growth and development of the child from conception through adolescence. Content includes the family’s adaptation to the complications of pregnancy, the high-risk infant and the child with special needs. Emphasis is upon the nursing process to meet the individual needs of the childbearing and childrearing families in both the community and the hospital. This course stresses application of the nursing process to help families prevent illness and/or regain health. Included in the classroom experience is an introduction to care of groups of patients in the community. Included in the clinical experience is a medical-surgical rotation introducing students to more independence when caring for small groups of adult patients.

NURS208: Nursing Trends and Issues

Credits 1

Assists the senior student to embark upon a career in nurs¬ing; become a contributing member within the discipline of nursing; and understand the political, economic, social and cultural influences upon nursing and health care.
