Outboard Motor Technician (*Beginning Fall 2026)

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental systems of outboard engines, including their design, operation, and maintenance. It covers boating basics, outboard electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, powerheads, and propulsion mechanisms. Students will develop the knowledge to identify and work with key components, and identify common tools. 

Covers aspects of practical marine weather including the fundamental maritime weather concepts needed to plan safe and efficient voyages with a focus on decision making. Topics include, but are not limited, to pressure and wind, global winds and currents, strong wind systems, clouds, fog, wind and terrain, weather maps, sources of weather data and onboard forecasting.

This course provides an in-depth understanding of Yamaha's portable outboard engines, emphasizing regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Students will gain hands-on experience using Yamaha service literature and specialized tools to maintain engine components such as the powerhead, lower unit, fuel system, and electrical systems. Designed to prepare students for the Yamaha portable outboard motor certification exam, the course combines both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in maintenance and repair.

This course provides students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to maintain and service Yamaha midrange outboards ranging from 40 to 50 horsepower. Emphasizing practical application, the curriculum covers critical topics such as engine oil systems, fuel systems, electrical components, and lower unit maintenance. Students will learn to utilize specialized service tools and interpret service literature, preparing them to sit for the Yamaha midrange outboard certification exam.

This course equips students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to maintain and service Yamaha inline outboards ranging from 90 to 200 horsepower. Emphasizing practical application, the curriculum covers critical topics such as engine oil systems, fuel systems, electrical components, and lower unit maintenance. Students will learn to utilize specialized service tools, interpret service literature, and understand Yamaha’s service protocols, all while preparing for the Yamaha inline outboard motor certification exam. 

This course focuses on the maintenance and servicing of Yamaha V-engine outboards (250-300 HP). Students will learn essential maintenance tasks, including oil changes, valve adjustments, lower unit servicing, and troubleshooting techniques for engine performance. The course integrates the use of Yamaha service literature and specialized tools, emphasizing safety and compliance throughout. Students will also explore fuel system maintenance, propeller performance, and real-world application in hands-on labs. Designed to prepare students for the Yamaha V-engine certification exam, the course combines both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in maintenance and repair.
